ACTIVITY

Ask a few students to go to the back of the room and look toward the back wall or to go out into the hall for a moment. When these students are not looking, do an unusual activity (such as throwing the eraser at the wall). Ask the students who saw this to immediately write down what happened. When they are finished (within a minute or two), have them tell the other students what happened and have that group then attempt to write down what just happened. Explain that this differentiation is what separates primary and secondary sources.

Have students write an eyewitness or primary source account of an event. It could be of a class that you teach or of a school event such as a lunch period in the cafeteria. Have them observe and record events that took place. Limit observations and interviews to a specified amount of time—for example, one lunch period. In the case of lunch in the cafeteria, have students interview different people about what took place by having them talk to

1. Food staff

2. Students eating

3. Monitors

4. Teachers

Have students write a detailed two-page account of what they observed. In class, have students review what they observed—noting consistencies and inconsistencies between what they reported.

Variation: Have students report an event and then use one another’s reports to write a history of what occurred. Distribute four or five reports of a particular event written by different students to each student. Have them come back with a one-page description of what occurred. Have students discuss with one another why they emphasized certain information in their reports. Discuss how their reports, based on the same sources, differ from one another.
